Arrived luckily in Brownsville after 24 hours of travelling, but my luggage is still in Paris!!!! At least that’s what they told me. Bought a tootbrush and a deodorant and will go to bed. My bags will come tomorrow anyway, hopefully.

Today Constanze arrived in Brownsville. Unfortunately without her luggage. I guess it has been lost on its way. Guess in what mood she was.

Day 7 - “SORRY. YOUR DIAL CANNOT BE COMPLETED.” …

Constanze calls from Austria. She talks for like a minute through, without taking a break. Before I can even say anything, the phone dies. Great! The information she has given me: A very important film funding institution has not yet agreed on giving us the missing budget for our movie. Therefore, Constanze is not sure, if we can afford shooting the whole film. If we don’t get the money together within the next two weeks, we will need to make a short movie or a documentary or something like that. Well, as I said, after telling me that, the phone died.

I gotta take care of my cast from Cameron Park. So, again, I take a ride to that neighborhood. This time I go by day. After a while I find Zuly’s house. Zuly is sitting on the porch, doing her mother’s nails. I ask her if she’s still interested in the movie and if I can try out some scenes with her and her friends. She’s excited but still, she’s gotta finish doing her mother’s nails. So we make an appointment for next week with all of her friends.

Day 5 - IN THE GHETTO

No news from Fuego’s friends, who got arrested in San Antonio. Fuego has disappeared as well and I am getting worried. None of my contacts from Cameron Park answer the phone or return my emails. Cameron Park is one of the most dangerous parts of Brownsville, but still I don’t wanna lose any more time and decide to take a ride to that neighborhood. I know it’s already getting dark, I know I’m white and I know I dont speak any Spanish. But I don’t care. You gotta do what you gotta do.

Cruising through Cameron Park, I am looking for Zuly’s house. I met Zuly in December and I don’t really remember where exactly she lives. I drive through extremely dark, narrow streets, trying to avoid the potholes. Once in a while I am passing people who are hanging out on the sides of the streets, kinda checking me out as I am driving by. I get kinda scared and try not to catch their attention by going too fast or too slow in my car. All of a sudden, my cell phone rings. It’s Fuego telling me he’s in the hospital. Then the connection dies. I freak out and drive to the hospital like a maniac. I´m scared that he got shot or stabbed or is about to die….. Uuuuaaaahhhh!!!
Guess what! All there was, was Fuego waiting for his wife to deliver their baby. Well, I guess, sometimes life is as simple as that.

Day 4 - … AND THE OSCAR GOES TO …

Since the casting in December, there is one thing clear: The part of “the nerd” can only be played by one special person. I decide to call him and ask him if he wants to come out in my movie. He is freaking out when I ask him. Well, hem, hem, I guess I can do this now: Ladies and Gentleman, I proudly present: “Ricky, the Nerd”!!!!!

Day 3 - GETTING TO KNOW JESÚS

Finally I got a hold of Fuego. He’s supposed to come out in my movie along with his friends. The bad news: All of his friends have been arrested in San Antonio and are stuck there. Only his friend RJ is left. Still, we met at RJ’s house to go through the script. While Jesús and Jesús get comfortable and smoke some joints, I read the script out loud. After a while I see that they get tired and don’t really listen any more. So I decide to stop reading after half of it. Jesús also offers a joint to Jesús and Jesús just thinks, a few drags won’t hurt. What Jesús doesn’t know is that the American joints are pure weed. In addition, Jesús is not really used to smoking weed since he smoked his last joint 10 years ago. So, no wonder that Jesús gets super stoned after just a couple of drags. When Jesús gives Jesús a ride home, he drives super-slow and Jesús freaks totally out on this. Jesús, happily driving, is amused about Jesús’ reaction and laughs the whole ride through. Well, anyhow, Jesús got back home safe. And the other Jesús found his way back, too. – after being lost for some hours, cruising through the streets of Brownsville.

Day 2 - FACING THE UNEXPECTED

Things go slow in Brownsville. Too slow for me. I can’t get a hold of any of the people I met in December. I wanted them to come out in my movie but some are already in prison or on probation outside the Rio Grande Valley. And the rest just won’t answer the goddam phone. In addition I can’t find any decent coffee here, which has enough caffeine to keep me going and let me forget my jetlag. Also: The internet doesn’t work in my room.
