CHRONOLOGY OF HORROR

1) I’m trying to get the material into the editing computer again. As nobody has a clue anyway, I’ll just proceed with what I’ve been doing so far. (“maybe it was wrong to be so hectic!”)

2) I notice that the hard disc is full, although I’ve just deleted some unnecessary clips.

3) Reiter and me are trying to find out which files are off-line (the Avid synonyms don’t allow any connections by name!)

4) We’re checking the folder MS_SOFT…

5) We’re scanning the folder and get error messages like “An access violation ecxeption occurred…”

6) We’re sending the defective files to the quarantine folder and hope for tomorrow to be a better day.

HELP!!!

Reiter’s bringing that AVID support guy. Barbara and me are bored and pissed, ‘cause that guy doesn’t have a clue and also doesn’t admit it. (Reiter didn’t know how to sync and asked him)… I’m especially getting more and more pissed, ‘cause I think I know now, how it would work. (You have to read the AVID manual!)

ERROR!!!!!!

Claudia in the morning in front of the editing computer:

COMPUTER to CLAUDIA
„Exception…“

CLAUDIA to COMPUTER
„Scan file“

COMPUTER to CLAUDIA
„Unable to scan file…“

CLAUDIA to COMPUTER
„But why?“

COMPUTER zu CLAUDIA
„An error has occured while initializing…“

What can you say? Nothing works. Again! Reiter has called the AVID (the editing system) support guys and asked them to come to the editing room. Hopefully that’ll work.

THOUSANDS OF TAKES!!!

Claudia again worked on all the lost files of editing material. Heaps of work… By now she starts connecting sound and images. Although the whole world claims that the editing program does so automatically it doesn’t work in our case.

All the people we’ve been asking don’t know what to do as well. Even in the online forums nobody has a piece of advice for us.

Therefore Claudia has to piece together every single take of each scene (200 scenes with 10 shots including 1-20 takes = thousands of takes). In the meantime Reiter is busy trying to find a solution. Otherwise Claudia will sit in front of the editing computer for months without having a single frame edited.

REJECTION!

Hannes, who wanted to edit our movie, had to give us a rejection. It would just not have been possible for him to do his normal job and edit our film at the same time. Constanze also doesn’t know what to do anymore and asked me to meet up with a few editing students. I’ll definitely do so. But I also believe, that our movie and the huge amount of material can quickly frustrate a student who has only done short films so far. We’ll see… Who knows, what kind of talents we’ll find…

ENCOUNTER WITH THE THIRD KIND

There are some things in life that can simply not be explained. Some people call them magic, others call them miracles. In our case I’d call it an encounter with the third kin: That’s due to the fact, that some parts of the material which Claudia has worked with are “offline”, which means it’s just not there anymore. Gone. The task “relink”, which normaly saves your arse in that case, also doesn’t work. The stuff was just gone. Which again means for Claudia to do all the work again. That she hasn’t given up yet shows her strength. Respect!!!

THE CUTTER TASK

Hannes has had a look into our material and would like to edit it. Although we can’t pay him and although he has to earn money to feed his family besides… He wants to talk to his boss, if he’s allowed to do so during his job, whenever there’s nothing else to do. Hope that works…

CLAUDIA versus EDITING COMPUTER

Well, Claudia’s already corresponding with the computer, which looks, written as a dialogue, like that:

CLAUDIA:
„Import P2 > Clips to Bin“

COMPUTER
„An Error occured…“

CLAUDIA:
„Exception….“

COMPUTER
„Media will bei unavailable in the media directory…“

However, some clips work without getting into a disagreement with the computer. With the others we just don’t know what to do with them. As a result Claudia and Reiter are fiddling around, while I have read the tutorial of the editing software several times and Haake has looked for help in online forums. And more bad news: Still, there’s no editor in sight.

MONOTONY IN FRONT OF THE EDITING COMPUTER

Still no editor in sight to cut our movie. But Claudia and Reiter have found a solution, how to get the matieral into the bloody editing computer without any error reports. Therfore Cladia has been siiting for days in front of the computer, again and again pressing those buttons:

Consolidate / Enter

Relink Master Clips to Target Drive / Enter

Import P2 > Clips to Bin / Enter

Clip > Modify > Tape-name ändern /irgendwas eingeben und Enter

And that’s what she’s doing for ALL the files (which is an enormous amount), on a daily basis, 8 hours a day. Respect!!!
